The Thunderbirds, established in 1953, is named after a mythological bird found in Native American legends in the southwest region of the United States.

For over half a century, they have served as ambassadors for the U.S. Air Force, promoting international goodwill at air shows throughout the U.S. and in over 60 countries around the world, and have flown several different aircraft during their distinguished history. The team began their relationship with the F-16 Fighting Falcon in 1983 by exchanging their T-38A Talon jet trainers for the F-16A. In 1992, these were traded in for the current F-16C Block 32 aircraft, which feature improved radar, cockpit avionics, and an enlarged tail fairing for ECM equipment. 2009 will see the Thunderbirds upgrade again to the U.S. Air Force's latest F- 16, the Block 52, which is equipped with a more powerful Pratt & Whitney F100-PW-229 engine. Apart from the removal of radar, the replacement of the 20mm Vulcan cannon with a smoke generating system, and other minor changes, the Thunderbirds aircraft are identical to those flown by combat units, and can be returned to full combat ready condition in under 72 hours if necessary. Giving over 70 performances per year in a season that lasts from March to November, the Thunderbirds will surely continue to dazzle audiences with their aerobatic repertoire for many years to come.

Tamiya 89791 Limited Edition 1/35 SU-100 Russ.WeatherMaster

In 1943, the Russian SU-76 self-propelled gun was no longer effective to battle the new German tanks. During the end of 1943, the SU-85 was developed to replace the SU-76 self-propelled gun. The SY-85 was based off of the T-34 hull and armed with a 85mm gun. However, due to the thickness of the armor, demand grew for a more powerful tank. The SU-85 was modified in 1944. It was outfitted with a 100mm gun and renamed the SU-100. The 100mm did not have the same piercing power as the German 75mm or British 17pdr guns, but it was heavier than the 75mm and allowed the Russian army to easily destroy the German tanks. The turret-less design also was an advantage because labor and construction costs were 20% less. In contrast, the turret-less design left the SU-100 weak in narrow or sloped terrain. As a result, the SU-100 was used as fire support for infantry and anti-tank combat. The SU-100 remained in service until the 1970s.

The Russian T34-76 stunned the infamous German Panzer division. In retaliation, the Tiger and Panther tanks were developed. As a result, the improved T34-85 tank was designed with an improved 3-man turret design and more powerful 85mm gun. The new T34-85 featured a 500-hp, V12 liquid cooled diesel engine. The Russians produced 29,000 T-34-85 tanks from 1943 to June of 1945. The T-34 played an influential part in removing the Germans from Russian soil.

Tamiya 84111 Tamiya RC Limited Tyrrell P34 Six Wheeler 1976 Japan GP

The Tyrrell P34 caused a sensation within the F1 world when it was unveiled in 1975. Derek Gardner sought to enhance braking and cornering performance by reducing the size of the drag-inducing front tires while preserving contact patch area through the use of 4 tires, thereby creating the only 6-wheeled machine in F1 history.

It took part in actual races beginning with the Spanish GP in 1976, and drivers J. Scheckter and P. Depailler went on to drive their cars to a 1-2 finish at the Swedish GP to prove the incredible potential of the P34. At the final race of the season, the P34 appeared before Japanese fans at the inaugural Japanese GP held at Fuji Speedway. F1 race cars often have race-specific modifications, and the No.3 Tyrrell P34 driven by J. Scheckter at the Japanese GP was distinguished by a triangular net guard fitted on the air funnel and large wingtip panels on the rear wing. The race was a battle for the championship between Ferrari s N. Lauda and McLaren's J. Hunt and drew a great deal of attention both within Japan and around the world.

The weather was fair on Friday and Saturday, but conditions were worsened by rain on Sunday. Although the race finally began at 3PM after a long delay, championship contender N. Lauda quickly retired. The lost excitement was brought back by the performances of the Japanese drivers and P. Depailler's Tyrrell P34. From his 13th place qualifying position, Depailler overtook the field to briefly lead before a tire puncture dropped him back to finish the race in second place behind M. Andretti s Lotus.
